     Budget wedding and larger reception

I need some advice (first marriage). My fiance (married once before) thinks that since we are paying for the wedding we should have a small personal ceremony and then invite people to a possibly larger reception. I dont exactly disagree with this but my thought is that if we are going to spend the money on the reception, which I would like outside at our house, (for which we will need a tent, chairs and tables, food, etc.), why not just have the ceremony then too? Wouldn't the cost basically be the same?

I agree with you, however, this is something that two of you will want to agree on. Talk it over.

I agree with Nancy. This is something that the two of you really need to talk about, and agree on.

I am certain we will continue to talk about it, he seems to think we can do it for $1000 and I think he's crazy! Any guesses what the least amount of money you can spend on a wedding is and still have it be nice?

It depends on what your definition of nice is.Smile

Rather than approaching your wedding from "what is the least amount of money you can spend...", do this. Establish what is really important to you. In other words, what do you absolutely have to have to achieve the day you dream of?

Once you settle on that, work backward filling in the gaps with ways and ideas to achieve that vision with the money you have available. Doing it this way will help you focus, and perhaps stretch your dollars. At least, that is what I have found.

It also depends on where you live. For example, here in New York City, you'd be hard pressed to plan a wedding for that sum of money at any location - even your own home.

That is a good way to approach it. We live in Montana, outside Missoula, and we planned to have it at our home because I thought that might help spread the money out a bit.
