I'm going to get married next October, still quite away, and have begun telling my friends and family about it. I told a couple of my co-workers, whom I plan on inviting, that I wanted to have a nice reception, but also save as much money as possible. I told them that I heard of using cupcakes to form a wedding cake, and planned on having them instead of the traditional wedding cake. They both put their foot down and said that i should definitely have a traditional wedding cake. They volunteered to buy my wedding cake and said that this would be their wedding gift to me and my fiance. Would it be all right to accept this, or should I go ahead and just get the cupcakes? I know that cakes can get rather expensive, and I just feel that it's too much for them to purchase one for me. Any advice, should I accept, or would that be bad etiquette?

There's really nothing wrong with using cupcakes to form your wedding cake as long as the style matches the formality of your event. I have seen dozens of photographs all over the internet depicting tiers if cupcakes forming a wedding cake. However, I'm not sure this will save you any money (unless you're making them yourself) since the decorating of the wedding cake is what can become costly. Imagine decorating each and every cupcake separately?
Check out theose warehouse type places like Costco or BJ's. They have a bakery and, believe it or not, their cakes taste really good!
Lastly, it is not bad etiquette to accept your friend's gesture but if cupcakes are what you want or you just have qualms about accepting then do your homework.
There is a bit of information on this page about how to save money on your wedding cake. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".

We were at a wedding where home made turtle brownies were stacked in a pyramid, surrounded by tall crystal columns which supported the actual wedding cake. The wedding cake was a small beautiful (professionally made and decorated) chocolate cake covered in red rose petals.
Having your cake made this way allows for the traditional "bride cuts the cake" ceremony. The couple I mentioned had a small reception, so they served both the cake and the brownies. Not surprisingly, most of the guests opted for the brownies. Loving chocolate cake as I do, I tried a small piece of the cake. The brownies tasted better!
The couple saved money plus made their guests happy by having a smaller wedding cake made, and supplying mouth watering turtle brownies. Yes, you can save money and have your cake and eat it too!
My opinion.... do brownies instead of cupcakes! Copen Cabana DJ Audio Visual Production providing Custom Wedding Coffee Table Photo Book with DVD Services http://www.knowareland.com
