Planning a wedding on a budget in Napa Valley California

I would like to have a nice formal wedding for about 150 relatives and friends but I'm caught between what I would like and what we can afford. I would like to have a formal yet intimate ceremony and reception in Napa Wine Country or Marin County coastline (aka Pt. Reyes area) but my parents will not be helping us with wedding costs and instead are spending thousands of dollars redoing their home. I will be graduating from college only a few months before my wedding and my fiance returned to college after serving in the military. I would rather see money go toward school or a house but I still would like to have an elegant wedding if at all possible. Any suggestions on places or companies that will help cut costs???

Dear Troubled Bride,

First, let's work on what appears to be your disdain for your parents' decision to spend money on what is theirs and not on your wedding. Please do not be angry with them, as this is your wedding. Parents are no longer financially responsible for their children's weddings. So, they should be able to remodel with clear consciences.

All of us must work with in our budget and perhaps if you waited for the time when you two could afford the wedding you want, you would be happier. Other that waiting, there are rooms each locality uses for classes and workshops that can be rented at reasonable prices. Just here in Davis we have many very nice choices. So, this is an option.

Taking cake decorating classes could help you with making your own wedding cake. This helps as well. Asking someone who is good with a camera could cut the cost of hiring a photographer and videographer. You wouldn't have the professional product, but it could be very nice--especially with today's software programs used for editing.

I'm sure our wedding planners have many more great ideas.

Best wishes,
