Planning a wedding reception on a budget

My fiance and I are getting married on May 26, 2006 through the JOP as my parents are not alive today to actually see me get married or give me away. I do have 3 brothers left in my family but we are not very close. This is why my fiance and I had decided to go through a JOP. His family members are the type of people who wants to know when a event is happening. My fiance and I agreed to a wedding reception in honor of our marriage the day after the ceremony. However, since we do not want to have a formal wedding reception where all of our guest will show up wearing tuxes and dresses, we would like to keep this as casual as possible.

I am planning this without any help and I do not know what I should have at our reception. I know we would like to have music, food, favors, etc. but I am looking to save money. We assume there will be at least 60-70 people at our reception and I want to make this reception enjoyable yet cost effective. Please help!!

Dear Winnie,

It may be best for you to read a good book on this subject. An easy to read book with great ideas is the Bride's Book of Etiquette. It has a chapter on receptions.

Other than that, you can host your reception in a location that is inexpensive. The local parks and recreation department often has rooms to rent for a small fee.

Hosting a reception during a time when guests are not expecting a meal is best too. A 10 am or 2 pm reception could be a cake and beverage reception. Other times are appropriate for finger foods or simple sandwiches. Avoiding alcohol will keep the budget small also. You will probably want a sparkler for toasting; it could be non-alcohol. But, it is not obligatory and merely symbolic.

Please check out some books. You will gain many ideas and hopefully won't leave anything out that is important to you.

Best wishes,

Don't forget having a good DJ for your wedding, so they can help the event flow smoothly, provide wireless microphone, set the tone for the evening and help create wonderful memories.

Make sure your budget includes a professional photographer or at least someone with a very good camera and skill to take the photos. If hiring a photographer, be sure to negotiate the purchase of your negatives or high resolution digital images. Many photographers charge extra for this, but others include in their package.

Regarding money: Put the money into the memories. Don't forego a photographer to opt for an expensive cake.

The main thing. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!
