I am helping a friend plan her wedding. She is on a budget and initially was planning to have an evening dessert buffet (around 5pm) and then invite family for a dinner. I would like suggestions including some hot and cold appetizers; something filling considering the time of day.
Does anyone have any ideas for a a November wedding reception menu?

You might consider hot and cold pasties, pasties being a pastry pocket (half moon) filled with whatever you choose. They're easy to make, freeze wonderfully and are very filling. Considering it will be November, you might think about using sirloin tips with chopped onion, celery, potatoes and carrots. Or do something with chicken, shrimp, etc.
They are perfect for making vegetarian style, just by swapping out the meat with crumbled Boca Veggie Burgers, etc. Depending on the size of your pastry press (they make from bite size to something that takes two hands to hold), you can use canned fruit filling (blueberry, apple, pineapple, etc.) and mix with cream cheese for a yummy fruit filled pie. These pasties are always baked (not fried), so are not that high in calories.
I used to make these all the time and freeze for a quick meal or dessert. Makes me hungry just thinking about them. Copen Cabana DJ Audio Visual Production providing Custom Wedding Coffee Table Photo Book with DVD Services http://www.knowareland.com
