I've noticed that lots of you whip-smart brides out there have managed to save bundles of money on planning. My fiancee and I have a very, very small budget. It's almost embarrassing. For a party of 80 we are hoping to spend under 3 thousand. Is it possible?! I feel like a car stuck in a muddy ditch: wheels spinning and not lurching forward. Any tips on how to feel like I have more control over this? The most important component (the ceremony/reception site) hasn't even been identified yet. YIKES!! Fellow Bride

Dear Realistic Budget,
That is not so unrealistic as long as you search for low cost sites and are very flexible. The most popular months to get married are June, August, September, October, May, and November, so you may want to avoid these months because they could be more expensive and you will have fewer choices of location.
I was married at our local Veteran's Memorial Center in the garden, in July. It was beautiful! ...and cheap. Our reception was in an adjoining room that rent for next to nothing and it included a kitchen. We had a catered buffet that was delicious, but inexpensive. All in all, we spent around $2500. It can be done.
Some areas are more expensive also. So, shop around.
A good idea for saving money on a reception is to have a simple cake and champagne reception, a brunch, tea, or something similar.
I'm sure a number of brides and other experts have more ideas for you. It will be fun and interesting to hear from them.
