     wedding on a budget

is it okay to invite some people to the ceremony and not to the reception in order to save money? if so, do you tell them ahead of time the reason why you are doing so?

No, everyone invited to the ceremony should also be invited to the reception. Etiquette is just common sense. Think about how you'd feel if you were only invited to the gift giving portion of an event and not to the party to follow? You would probably feel as though you were not important. A good host always considers the feelings of her guest.

All gift giving is optional. But, wedding gifts are expected. You would be expected to send a gift if invited and you attend. If the couple is hosting a reception and you are not invited, this is their social faux pas. It is not polite to respond by committing another one.

Personally, I would be insulted and would choose not to attend.
