I am an Evangelical Christian marrying an atheist. I want a wedding in a church, but without a lot of religious elements. What kinds of ministers would marry us, and what churches usually allow renting their facilities for a wedding like this?

As non-members, you will probably find your church options somewhat limited. However, some non-denominational and more 'liberal' denominations may be open to your request. I do not know where you live - but here in the Chicago metro area, we have chapels that are owned by park districts, historical societies, etc. These structures are available for rent for events (such as weddings). You can probably locate an officiant to perform a wedding in such a 'church' setting. You can reach me through the website below or at 630-892-2400 for more specific help. Generally, Unitarian Churches and Quaker Churches are open to renting their chapels. Non-Denominational University Chapels are often available for this service as well. Some churches will insist that their clergy perform your ceremony. Other will not. Conservative congregations that have a lucrative base may require that you become a member. I have worked in Episcopal, Presbyterian and Lutheran Churches as well. Church laws, the pastor and whether the Church needs the income are also factors.
Go on line. Check the yellow pages. Call local churches and universities.
Take heart, you will find a church that welcomes you!

Hi,
By definition, an Evangelical Christian marrying an atheist is an oxymoron. An Evangelical Christian, by definition, believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible. The Bible warns believers are not to be unequally yoked with a non believer. My comments are not meant to be judgmental. Either you misspoke about being an “Evangelical” Christian or you will wrestle with a lot more serious matters than where you will have your ceremony. My prayers are with both your wedding place and your marriage. You have already received good advice on this site for your wedding location options. Have you considered an outdoor place with a Justice of the Peace or notary?
