My son and his fiancee are planning a May 2010 wedding, recently we found out they are expecting a baby in October. For the baby's sake, should they get married by a Justice of the Peace and then renew their vows in May 2010. I am not sure what is appropriate...

If your son and his bride want to be married before the baby is born they should go ahead and plan the wedding. There is plenty of time to plan a nice event well before October. Vow renewals are not do-over weddings or meant to replace a wedding in any way.
Congratulations on these upcoming events. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
Yes, a vow renewal is not supposed to resemble a wedding and is not received well if hosted soon after a wedding. But, a wedding reception could be held within the first year (sooner the better) of marriage. It isn't a gift giving event (neither is a vow renewal) and traditional wedding reception elements don't seem appropriate the longer the couple waits to host one. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
