     Need to marry quickly

I apologize in advance in this situation has already been answered. I am getting married in less than 2 weeks. This will be the first wedding for both my fiance and I. Unfortunately his mother is ill with cancer, and we have been advised to have a ceremony now because we do not know if she will make it to the wedding. Obviously we will do this because it is very important to all of us that she witness our marriage. If we are married in her room by a minister, can we still have our service in a few days in front of family and friends? I would feel awful if my father couldn't give me away and dance with me. Can I still wear my wedding dress?

Dear Bride,

This is an unfortunate and painful moment for all of you. But, in the world of etiquette once you are married, that's it. A second ceremony would be a vow renewal or a blessing of your marriage.

It may be best if someone other that a clergy member married you. Wear your gown. Then you can wear it again for the 'blessing of your marriage'. But, for your father to walk a married woman down the aisle would not seem proper.

Perhaps he could present the two of you together at the beginning of your ceremony as a married couple who are sharing their vows of commitment with the guests. This would be very special and unique. There are ways to make this appear proper and yet very special. It just shouldn't appear to be a wedding.

Please read more about vow renewal etiquette while trying to plan something that resembles some of what you wanted in your wedding. All it takes is a bit of imagination.

Best wishes,
