Officiant at brunch after vow renewal ceremony?

My husband and I are just starting to plan a small vow renewal ceremony for our upcoming anniversary. There will be 14 of us, including my husband and me -- all family. We are thinking we'll have a brief ceremony followed by a Sunday brunch in a restaurant's private room. We are looking for an officiant now so it will be someone we don't know personally. Do we invite the officiant to stay for brunch or is that inappropriate since he/she is not part of the family? I think they would feel out of place so my instinct is to tell the restaurant we'll be 14, but I also wonder if it's rude to have this person conduct the short ceremony and then just leave? How is this usually done?

Dear Lisaclark,

You really don't need an officiate for a vow renewal since it isn't a legal ceremony. There are some very nice ceremonies in books or you could create one yourself. A friend or family member could perform this for you and join in the celebration afterwards. But, if you hire someone who specializes in this, you don't really have to invite that person for brunch. It is a nice gesture though.

We do invite officiates to wedding receptions.

Best wishes,
