Surprise Party with vow renewal ceremony

I am planning a surprise party for my parents who will be married for 40 years this month. It is a casual party with lots of family, current close friends and some old friends I know they have not seen in awhile. In addition to the party, I am also doing a surprise vow renewal ceremony for them. The more I read though the more a surprise renewal sounds in bad 'etiquette'. Also, any tips on vows that can be read if they are not written by them, or a 'script' of sorts for whoever is the person doing the ceremony? Thanks for your help and comments. I want this to be a special night for them!

It's wonderful that you want to give your parents such a special tribute to their long marriage. But, a vow renewal ceremony is a very personal event. Most couples would want to write their own vows. There's really no way to guess at the deep feelings your parents have for one another by writing vows for them. Plus, what if one of them doesn't want to have a vow renewal ceremony? It could be embarrassing. Even if you think you're 100% sure they would love to do this, it's best left to the couple to plan for themselves.
