Hello! My fiance, who is in the military, and I are planning a traditional wedding to take place a year from now. If the situation arises where he might be sent overseas, we would like to be married and plan to go to the court house to achieve this. If that happens, will the wedding we've planned still be a "wedding" or something else? Is there anything special legally we would need to do? Can we still consider the date we planned for our wedding to be our wedding day (when it gets here), or would it be the date we went to the court house? Thanks!
We actually have many posts concerning this. For any reason, if you marry, you are married. There are many types of ceremonies, even one where it is simply the two of you in front of a clerk. But, this would still be a wedding. This would be your wedding date. If you planned to host a vow renewal later, that would be fine. But, it wouldn't be a wedding and certainly shouldn't appear to be one. It would appear improper.
I agree with rebecca - the date you married is your anniversary - that cannot be chnaged. But, you could consider having just a wedding reception later. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
