     Vow Renewal on 1st Anniversary

Hello. My fiancee and I will be married in Jamaica with no one else present at the ceremony. We would like to have an anniversary party on our first anniversary and would like to do a vow renewal with family and friends prior to the party. I understand that vow renewals are mostly coupled with milestone anniversaries or significant events. Is it acceptable to have a vow renewal only after one year of marriage? The renewal is important to me because although we choose to marry this way in Jamaica, I still would like our family to somehow be a part of it. Since I know they could not afford to travel (jobs, expense, timing, etc) we want to celebrate our first year of marriage with them and also want them to witness some part of an exchange of vows. We plan to video the ceremony in Jamaica and we will share this with our families when we return as well as sending out announcements upon our return. Is this enough and should the first year anniversary party be just that without the vow renewal?

Dear Augustbride,

There are no rules against hosting a vow renewal after a year, but many view it negatively. Plus, this isn't your wedding, so it is still not 'the' wedding your family missed. It is simply you two promising to each other that you are still in love and want to stay married.

It may be best to host a reception once you return, invite everyone, and play the video throughout the event. This will have more meaning to them.

If you do this, there is no need to send announcements to those guests invited to the reception.

Best wishes,
