eloped 12 yrs ago, want to renew, but how?

My husband and I will be married 12 years in Sept. I actually climbed out the window & met him up the street, then we drove out of state and married by a Notary Public. ( I was 19 & he was 21) We hurt alot of people by eloping. We don't regret it and would do the same thing again, no question. We have had a rough few years and would like to renew our vows. The only problem is, my hubby doesn't want to invite anyone from his family. (His dad was the only one he was close to and he passed away a few years ago) I want my family there and my best friend and her husband and son. I know his mom would have an absolute fit if she weren't invited, but neither one of us like her (Crazylong, Unsurelong story there!!!!!!!!). I really don't know how to handle this. HELP!! Shocked We want to renew our vows and I'm afraid if we had a private ceremony again we will be hurting everyone again (salt in old wounds). PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO HANDLE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

Dear Renewing,

Not to worry. This isn't a wedding, so there is no 'absolute have to invite this person' guest. Invite whomever you wish. This is a party for you, so you have all of the control.

Please read more about vow renewal etiquette.

Best wishes,
