unity candle and incorporting children into ceremony
The pastor suggested my husband and I have a unity candle at our vow renewal ceremony. I like the Encore candle and the "past, present, and future" idea of the candle. How does this work? Who lights the tapers? (Pastor suggested that our mothers light them. This doesn't seem appropriate to me.) Are the tapers extinguished after the center candle is lit?
How are children involved in a traditional vow renewal? We've decided on on walking down the aisle together behind our 3 small children (8, 6, and 4 yrs old). Do they stand at the altar for the remainder of the ceremony?
Thanks!

Normally, I would suggest having the children light the candles however, your children might be a little young for that. Possibily what you could do is have the mothers actually light the candles with the children standing between them.
As far as the role of the children I do not think there has been any tradition established for this. It is a matter of what is comfortable for your family and if the children can stand still for the duration of the ceremony. They could sit down and then rejoin you at the alter for the exchange of vows and having them stand behind you as you exchange vows. Just an idea. God Bless and best wishes to you and your family. And, please do include your children in some way. This is the essence of what the vow renewal is--a statement of your continued love and devotion to your family. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
