2nd wedding for common law marriage

My "husband" and I have been together for 7 years as a "married" couple. We just recently found out that our marriage license and marriage is legally invalid, although we have been together for 7 years. We had a small wedding ceremony 7 years ago. Is it okay to have a 2nd wedding to make everything legal?

Dear Denise,

If you are inviting guests, it may appear as if you just want to play bride and expect gifts since your guests see you as married. It may be best to just make it legal on paper. After all, you had the ceremony already.

A vow renewal may seem appropriate to guests, but it shouldn't appear to be a wedding.

If you are not inviting guests, you don't have to worry about their comfort level or how it is perceived. You can have your private ceremony and not worry.

Best wishes,
