Daughter remarried without children or stepchildren

My daughter remarried a week ago and they did not include her children or her husband's children. They married a week after getting engaged and only the parents were present. The children are teenagers and their feelings are hurt that they were not included. Any advice on how to smooth things out with the children? I've tried to talk to my daughter about this, but she doesn't see anything wrong with what they did. As a grandmother I would like to do something to help my grandchildren and new step grandchildren.

You can't change your daughter's mind on this so you're best route is to simply do something that you think would help the children to cope with the situation or that would ease their disappointment. I would suggest hosting a celebration "after party" for your daughter and new husband and both families. It wouldn't have to be huge, but would include all of the children and would give everyone a chance to meet and spend some time together as well as celebrate the marriage and new family that it creates. It could be a nice start for the children as they will all be entering into a new blended family.

You can't change the past or how things happened, but let your daughter and the children know that this is your way of showing that you are behind them and want to show your support and love in a very special way. Your daughter will probably be more receptive of the idea if it is presented in this way. They will also continue to need your support as they work to join their families together.

It's great to see a mother/grandmother who is so sensitive to the needs of her grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and willing to do whatever it takes. Way to go!
