     Hyphened Last Name

I'm thinking of hyphening my last name.

What are the rules and guide lines here?

First, before you consider doing the hypenation thing, check out some of these brides (attachments) who should definitely NOT be thinking of hyphens!

Now, for the serious part of your question:

When applying for a marriage certificate in any state let them know that you are retaining your married name as Smith-Jones.

You may choose to hypenate in the following manner:

Jane Smith-Jones

Mrs. Jane Smith-Jones

Mrs. David Smith-Jones

I'm happy I could cause a bit of destressing laughter on the board. The best thing you brides can do is to keep your sense of humor and learn to laugh at life and yourselves a little.

The really odd thing was that these were actually forwarded to me in one of those really annoying forwards you get from friends and family who put you on their mailing list. You know the ones, we all get them and wonder how we can ask to stop receiving these while not offending the sender. Unsure Then, all of a sudden, there is this question on my forum - same day. Freaky irony!Shocked

So does that mean it's addressed as Mr. & Mrs. David Smith-Jones. Will people refer to Mr. as Mr. David Smith-Jones when it should only be Jones?

Dear Pamela,

If you legally hyphenate your name, you can be addressed exactly as you wish to be addressed. You wouldn't be addressed as Jones, if your legal name is not Smith-Jones. It is your choice.

Best wishes,
