We are undecided whether or not to have an 'open bar' for a period of time. We will have around 200 guest in attendance, of which 150 would drink alcoholic beverages. While figuring a budget for the wedding, the 'beverage' cost would be more than the food AND we have a few guests that tend to get 'out of control'. We have a couple of ideas (other than just a cash bar). #1 Open Bar for 1 or 2 hours, which is the same cost or a little more than the food. #2 Paying for 1 drink per person for the cocktail hour & 'handing out' a sort of drink coupon as the guests arrive. We just want to try to control both the cost and the atmosphere. Is this too tactless?

It is not acceptable to use a cash bar, so your option to do a 1 to 2 hour open bar would be the most acceptable. Following the open bar offer sodas, coffee and water. Have you considered doing only beer and wine to hold costs down? Nancy Tucker President of Weddings Beautiful US http://www.weddingsbeautiful.com

I completely agree. It is never polite to ask guests to pay for any part of the party. But, you could limit the time the alcohol is served or do as Nancy has suggested. Many couples choose this option. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now

I too agree. You could also offer one signature alcoholic drink, such as apple or chocolate martinis, or a signature frozen/smoothie type drink that doesn't have alcohol in it but looks colorful and appetizing.
