I am planning a very small ceremony with just the two of us and the four children in attendance. After the ceremony I would like a quiet family dinner with just the 6 of us. Later in the evening I was thinking of having a party with family and friends but I do not know what is acceptable. Is it acceptable to just have finger foods and a desert table. Also, I have never believed in a cash bar at a reception but can not afford an open bar. Is it acceptable to have an open bar for a period and then a cash bar after that? We are working on a very small budget but I do not want to be tacky.
Selecting your menu depends on the time of night and the length of time. If the reception is held later in the evening then finger foods or hors de hourves are acceptable fare.
If you cannot afford to serve alcohol then please just do not serve it or limit your choices to just beer and wine at the tables during dinner or just during a cocktail hour. Host the wedding reception you can afford. A good host never asks their guest to pay.
