Bride wants Bachelorette attendees to pay for limo

I was recently invited to a Bridal Shower / Bachelorette Party. On the invitation the bride to be is requesting each person contribute $65 towards the limo. This in addition to having to buy her a gift and paying to party that evening.

I feel this is not only inappropriate but very tacky. If she wants a limo, basically she should pay for it! She claims this is wedding 'protocol', could you shed some light on this?

Thanks

Elle

Dear Elle,

No, this is not wedding protocol. She shouldn't be involved in this process at all. She cannot host parties for which others pay. If no one wishes to host these for her, she has no party.

If the hosts of this are not the bride and they want the guests to share the cost of a limo, this should be optional. All costs are mentioned up front so all guests can decide if they wish to attend.

Combining these two parties is rarely polite. The shower shouldn't cost the guests anything to participate besides to give a gift. Whereas the bachelorette party costs the guests, but there is no gift involved.

If your bride doesn't believe that she is commiting a wedding faux pas, you could suggest any etiquette book or this site.

Best wishes,
