Bridemaid's dress length at formal evening wedding
My daughter is getting married in August at three o'clock in the afternoon in a Catholic church. The reception is for 250 guests. Cocktail hour is at six on the terrace of the clubhouse of a PGA golf course with a sit down dinner at seven. She has a quartet and D.J. for dinner and dancing. Her dress appears to be very formal in strapless duponi silk, dropped waist, bustled billowing skirt with with chapel train. The bodice and sides of the dress have extensive beading. The reception site for dinner and dancing is very formal. She has chosen towered floral centerpieces with silk table linens and chair covers.
She is considering knee to tea length dresses for her nine bridesmaids. I believe she wants to make sure they may use the dresses again as cocktail dresses. I am proud she is considerate of her bridesmaids, however I am concerned the bridesmaid dresses may too informal. Would longer dresses be more appropriate?

Congratulations on your daughter's wedding! Based on your description of the formality of your daughter's dress and the formality of the reception itself, it calls for a more formally dressed bridesmaids. Knee length dresses are more suitable for a cocktail reception or a more informal affair, certainly not quite appropriate next to your daughter's formal dress with chapel train. Tea length is more formal than knee-length and can be acceptable, depending on the style of the dress. It is indeed very honorable of your daughter to suggest the dresses that can be used again. Depending on the style of the formal dress, however, it can be later shortened and made into a cocktail dress that can be used again. Also, your daughter might consider giving a gift to each of her bridesmaids that they could use many times over in the future: a nice evening bag or a nice set of jewelry. Enjoy the wedding! I agree, the long dress for the bridesmaids would be most appropriate. Many styles can be shortened to be reused. Nancy Tucker President of Weddings Beautiful US http://www.weddingsbeautiful.com
