Different bridesmaids dresses for a formal wedding?
Hi, I'm just starting to search for bridesmaids dresses. I found a really nice champagne color dress online and I love the style. The bridesmaids didn't try it yet, however, one of them told me (before I show anyone the style) to make sure that it's a halter top because she is bustier than most, and that she would feel most comfortable in that style. Another one told me that she would like to wear a strapless dress. I'm in the middle of all this and I didn't even ask them what they want to wear, they're just telling me those suggestions before seeing the dresses. I don't think I can please everyone. Is there anyway they can wear totally different styles, but with the same color, fabric, and designer? Also, will the MOH feel as she doesn't stand out, since they will all be different? This is a formal, evening wedding. Thank you.

I'm sure it's possible to get the same fabric and color in all sorts of styles. But, if you're shopping online there's no way to tell what style really flatters each bridesmaid. It's been my experience that many women have no idea what their best style is or what's most flattering. (I'm trying to imagine why a large busted woman would think a halter top would be best on her. I would think she's be most flattered and supported by a traditional sleeve or large strap).
If there is any way to get these women into a shop for a tryon, that would be best. If not, I would try to select a style that flatters most body types like an a-line style. Seperates also work well since the bridesmaids can mix and match.
Although you'll want to be sensitive to your firiend's feelings, after all, they have to be seen in public and make the purchase of this dress, you'll also want to keep control of the situation. Perhaps select a few styles from which they can choose. If you allow each woman to select their own style, you may end up with body parts, tattoo or other unwanted reveals.
While buying online is very convenient, it's best for those who already know what they're after. Make sure to check out the website's contact information, return policy and make a call to the BBB to be better informed.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Luckily for you, the latest trend for bridesmaids is to wear the same color and same fabric, but different designs, according to their figure. It's very easy to achieve, since big dress retailers like David's Bridal now have separates in the same color - different tops and different bottoms, so the bridesmaids can select the top in the most flattering shape and style, since everybody figure is different. However, the color, the skirt and the options for the top are dictated by the bride. This is not a new rule, but just a new trend, an option which will help you deal with your demanding "team" of bridesmaids. This way, everybody will be happy and the whole bridal party will look great in photographs in one uniform color! Enjoy the wedding! Irina Feygin, IMpeccable iMage, Inc. I saw the design online, but I will not be buying it online. We will be going to try them on to see which style fits most. Thank you very much for the great ideas!

Thanks for the ideas! Having same color, different design dresses is a new trend for formal weddings as well? I read that it is not appropriate for formal weddings and that is why I was worried. I do not mind having them in different styles, but is it appropriate for a formal, evening wedding? Thank you again

Of course, for a formal wedding, it is highly preferable that the bridesmaids wear the same dress. My suggestion is given from the Image Consultant' point of view and is based only on the fact that your bridesmaids don't want to wear the same dress. I suggested the option of wearing different tops as resently offered by Davids Bridal, to help avoid unnecessary confrontation. However, you might want to consult with an etiquette expert as well to make sure it's etiquette-appropriate. Irina Feygin, IMpeccable iMage, Inc. Image and Beauty and For Princess Bride

As long as the dress styles and fabric are all formal you're fine. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".

I agree. The color and formality is the real issue here. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
