I don't think my bridesmaid's dress is going to fit!
I'm in a wedding on the 20th of this month (11 days!) and our dresses are being made my the matron of honor's mother and she just now finished my dress! I go for my first fitting tuesday. She's had four months to make three dresses and she has really come down to the wire. The matron of honor's dress (which is her daughter) has been finished for awhile and it's fine. The maid of honor has already had three fittings and I'm supposed to pick it up for her tuesday when I go to get mine fitted so she can take it to an alterations place to get fixed. The dress was very tight in the bust but very baggy in the hips and she refused to take it in saying that was how the pattern was so that is why the maid of honor is going somewhere to pay for it. The woman is doing this for free because she has known the bride for a long time but we offered to pay her but she wanted it to be her wedding present. SO, we all picked different styles of dress to be made--the only thing they'll have in common is that they are tea length and the same color. I've gained weight since she measured me back in June (I just recently found out that I have a thyroid problem and am now on medication). In June, I was a 16/18 but now I'm a 20/22. The pattern only went up to 20. I didn't mention the weight gain on the phone when I spoke to her but I haven't even tried it on yet and she highly suggested that I buy some shapewear/girdle for it. This is making me nervous. I'm almost thinking that it's already running a little small and she knows it. There is no way this dress is going to fit me even with a girdle. I mean, I hope it does but what am I going to do if it doesn't? A dress is a lot easier to take in than it is out. Also, if it comes down that I have to go buy a dress off the rack at David's Bridal or whatever, I am in no way going to be able to get this color. It is a strange shade of redish, brownish, orange. What would be a good color to contrast this? I was thinking brown or burnt orange. I feel really bad that I've gained and I probably should have called the lady to let her retake my measurements but I've got 11 days to do something and I hate that I'm going to freak the bride out with this! I'm trying to stay calm until I meet with her tomorrow evening but I just have a bad feeling...

Dear Melly,
This is a problem because it is difficult to turn a size 16 dress into a size 20. But, a shaper can help. Plus, it makes most of us look better in a dress. So, please give that a try.
If you have to buy a dress, try to match the color once you are there. Take something that is the same color with you.

I know you don't want to upset the bride but I really think you need to speak to her so that she can approve whatever you decide to do - be it purchasing a new dress or altering the smaller size. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
