I am planning to have small wedding with only 3 bridesmaids. I am aware that this could be a financial hardship for a couple of my friends, and the third has bought so many bridesmaid's dresses for different weddings she could open her own shop. I am considering paying for my friends' dresses. Could buying their dresses serve as my gift to them or should I also plan another token of my appreciation to be given to the girls later? I don't believe it would be difficult for me to do both, but I haven't found any information as to what proper etiquette would be in this situation.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Buying their dresses is very considerate and generous of you and could be given as a gift. If you wanted to also give another token gift, that would be even more generous, but perfectly acceptable.
