I have a gorgeous eggplant evening gown hanging in my closet which I bought to wear to a formal party but then was unable to attend. I would like my maid of honor to wear this dress (it fits her perfectly and compliments her very well). She adores the dress and has no problem with wearing it . Is it ok for her to wear this dress and the bridesmaids to wear another dress of a similar color and is this color ok for a Spring wedding? If not appropriate for the season could you perhaps suggest a color?
P.S. I am not very fond of pastel colors.

The real problem here is that you will be setting the formality with this dress. All of the other dresses should be in the same formality. This could cost your bridesmaids too much money. Besides that, all of the attendants dresses should be the same dress if the wedding is somewhat formal. Your MOH can have different flowers.
For informal weddings with one or two attendants the ladies could wear nice dresses they have in their closets.
Eggplant is a very nice color but I am not sure about the suitability of wearing it in Spring. I am not as good at choosing colors as some other experts. So, I will bow out at this point. Hopefully someone else can lead you in the right direction here.
I totally agree. Also, for a spring wedding, you really need to choose a color scheme that reflects the look of the season.
You said that you don't like pastels but you have other options. You could select a color from the neutral family (taupes, beiges, etc.) or even a bright color or two. Avoid dark ones like burgundy, purples and greens. These colors are more appropriate for winter weddings.
