choose their dress in a set color?

Hello! This is my first posting, but I've found this to be a very helpful forum. Thanks so much for volunteering your time to answer questions.

We're early in the planning stage, but I know that the people we'd likely ask to be in the wedding party are grad students or on a similar budget. My idea was to ask all the bridesmaids to wear a black dress (we'd set a length/formality) and have the groomsmen wear black suits. That way they might not even need to buy something new, or at least they could choose an outfit they'd wear again. Then we could give each bridesmaid a sash or scarf and each groomsman a tie in the wedding colors.

Is this appropriate? I figure adding a matching piece would make them seem to fit. Any suggestions?

Dear Slaparat,

Many couples are doing this these days and it is very considerate of their attendants. As long as the formality is consistent and this is an informal wedding, it should be fine.

Best wishes,
