I am allowing my bridesmaids to select their own dresses providing it is a certain color with no additional embellishments. What other guidance should I be specifying? I was going to require a certain length so that is consistent but wasn't sure what else besides that.

Although this is a kind gesture, be careful. You could get a wide variety of styles and colors that may not be to your liking. If you'd like, you can offer a choice of, say, three dress styles and coordinating colors which includes all of them being the same length.
