     to bridesmaid or not

I'm 33 years old and planning my first and only wedding with the love of my life. We both have a lot of friends but wonder whether or not bridesmaids are a thing of the past. The last several weddings we attended had only one person stand next to either side: a maid of honor and a best man.

Congratulations! Marriage is definitely worth the wait and it sounds like you found THE guy!

Bridesmaids aren't really "a thing of the past". Have as many or as few as you like. As you said, you are "planning your first and only", so do it your way, whatever makes you and your groom happiest! You will need to have 2 witnesses.

I appreciate your response and agree. We should ex-press ourselves all the way to the alter! That being said and before I pick out the number and outfit of my bridal party. I was wondering if you could answer, "What is the historical purpose of a bridal party - aside from ushering?"

Bridesmaids and ushers were originally used for protection of the wedding couple. Ancient Romans believed that jealous demons where out to get the couple. The wedding party would all dress similar to the wedding couple so that the demons couldn't tell who was getting married.

Most recently, bridesmaids and groomsmen are used as witnesses to the marriage, to assist the bride and groom, and the ushers to escort the guests to their seats. Sometimes, just for fun, window dressing!
