Must we have a ring bearer and flower girl in the wedding?

Most of my family has elderly members and grown children, and I don't feel right asking children of friends so do you have to have children in a wedding? If you don't use a ring bearer or a flower girl, how would you fill in the gap and does it matter if you don't have them? Thanks

The roles of flower girl and ring bearer are optional; you can choose to include them or not.
