Different lengths for MOB/MOG and bridesmaids?

My daughter is getting married in a Catholic ceremony at 12 noon with sit down reception to follow. Bridesmaids to wear long dresses. There are some financial issues with groom's parents and I do not want to make his mother uncomfortable by asking her to buy a long dress that she probably cannot afford and will never wear again. Can MOB and MOG wear a short dress or suit if Bridesmaids are in long dresses and groomsmen in morning coats AKA strollers?

Dear Kathy,

Typically no, since the mothers try to match (almost) the formality of the bridesmaids. But, since this is held in the afternoon (typically shorter dresses), and if the dresses were in the same formality, only shorter, it could work. Just try to match the formality as much as possible.

Just an idea: There are some great thrift stores that carry formal attire. She just might find something used that fits the situation perfect and won't cost much at all.

Best wishes,
