Formal or informal dresses for mothers in a wedding

My daughter's wedding is at 5:30 pm outdoors. The men are wearing tuxedos. Is this formal or informal? Do MOB and MOG wear long or short dresses? What if one wears a long dress and the other wears a short dress is that proper?

Dear Cdickson,

This would be formal. The mother of the bride sets the tone and should blend with the bridesmaids without copying them. Your dress would be in the same formality, similar length, and blend with their colors. The mother of the groom should coordinate with you with out dressing more formally than you. The length of your dresses should be the same or close. But, as long as the formality is the same, you are fine.

Best wishes,
