GMOB Attire, upstaging MOB and MOG

It was difficult enough when the MOG chose and ordered her dress before I did, the MOB. Now my husband's mother the only grandmother on our side has bought a dress that definitely upstages us all. The crazy thing is she is 78 years old and although attractive for her age, she is no spring chicken. Her dress is a silk taffeta STRAPLESS dress with ruching from the bodice all the way down past the knees. It is very form fitting and then falls into a trumpet skirt. It looks like a prom or pageant dress. It does have a wrap with it. My dress is tafetta also and has ruching but not as formal. When she modeled it for us I was very upset. I have considered buying another dress but anything dressier than mine is too formal for the wedding. She will definitely upstage the MOG's dress. My daughter, the bride told her she liked it but I don't think she realizes at her age how unappropriate the dress is for a grandmother. Should we just let it go, accept she is going to wear it and let her deal with the consequences. We are spending alot of money on pictures, video and I know she is going to stand out like a sore thumb! I don't know if my husband will say anything to her, she doesn't take criticism well.

Dear MOB,

It might be best for your husband to speak to his mother privately. It is inappropriate for any of the mothers, and especially a grandmother, to wear a strapless dress. Your husband could tell her that he didn't want her to feel embarrassed if she found out after the wedding of her fashion faux pas.

You don't need to purchase another dress if you feel yours is in the proper formality and is conservative. If others are dressed inappropriately, they will stand out, not you. And, there seems to be one in every wedding. Not everything can be perfect.

Best wishes,
Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
