     Groom's Mother and Stepmother Dress

My stepmother recent purchased her dress before my mother did. This has my mother very upset. Is it customary for the stepmother to wait for the mother before buying her dress?

Dear Pats,

It depends. If she is being treated as a mother, then she should wait for your mother to purchase her dress so she can coordinate with her. Your stepmother wouldn't dress more formally than your mother. Now, if she is not being treated as one of the mothers, then she would be dressed as one of the guests, which is still less formal than your mother.

Best wishes,
