Is a bridesmaids dress appropriate for mother of the grrom

I read that a bridesmaid's dress is not appropriate for the mother of the bride. Does this also apply if the dress is a different color, material, and style? Is a halter dress appropriate? Also do my shoulders need to be covered? I would prefer a dress without a jacket.

Thanks!

Dear Tedman,

It is never appropriate for a mother to appear as a bridesmaid. This is distracting for the guests and not fair for the couple. All eyes should be on the couple and their attendants.

The dress should be conservative and not revealing. This is why strapless dresses are not proper.

Best wishes,
