My wedding is on July 16th at 2pm. It is a semi-formal wedding and the bridesmaids will be wearing tea length dresses. My mother wants to wear a floor length dress. The dress is made with a more casual type of fabric- no sequins or such. I thought it was fine, and I like the dress. Then one of our family members told us the length was not appropriate for a semi formal wedding. Please, I need your help. I like the dress, but I want to do what is proper etiquette.
Traditionally, the length of the dress should be the same as your bridesmaids. However, if you like the dress and it doesn't look formal, why not let her wear it. Formality is not just about the length, but more often is conveyed thought the material.
I agree with Rebecca, don't worry about the length of your mom's dress not matching the bridesmaids. If you like it, and she feels beautiful in then she should wear it.
