My son's wedding is in July. The bride is wearing a formal beaded strapless gown, the men (including my husband) are wearing black tuxes with white shirt, tie, and vest. The attendants are wearing short strapless dresses in cherry red (they are young teenage relatives of the bride). The MOB chose a satin tea length dress in taupe, with some crystal beading.
I have chosen a deep plum colored chiffon halter dress (with a shawl for the church), but do I have to have it shortened to tea length to match the MOB? I think a long dress matches the formality of the rest of the wedding party, but the MOB insists on cutting her dress down. Can I keep my dress long, or is it too formal?

Re: [njmog] MOB chose informal dress, what can MOG do?

Dear Njmog,
Length is only one part of formality. Many times it really doesn't dictate it. So, your dress may be in the same formality as hers. I'm more worried that you are showing too much skin. Mothers are expected to dress conservatively. So, be very careful. Plus, mothers match the formality of the bridesmaids' dresses. The shorter length is probably better.

I totally agree with Rebecca: the halter top dress might be a bit too revealing for the Mother of the Groom. You might want to re-think your outfit. Shorter length would be perfectly fine.
