     MOB dress appropriate?

I am getting married in August, an afternoon outdoor ceremony. The bridesmaids' dresses are short and strapless. My mother has chosen a short, black, cocktail style dress. The dress has semi-thin (~1")straps. I think she will look beautiful in whatever she wears and I really have no "preference" per se as to what type of dress she chooses. I am just concerned that others may see this choice as inappropriate for the MOB. Is this style of MOB dress appropriate? If not, how do I broach this subject with her? Thanks!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! While your Mom's dress is appropriate in length (since it's an outdoor ceremony and the bridesmaids are wearing short dresses), the top of the dress should be covered by either a shawl or a bolero jacket (that can be a beautiful, beaded, attention-getting piece). The key to the MOB dress code is "modesty". It doesn't have to look like an out-of-fashion dress, it just have to have enough coverage on top to correspond with the image of the Mother of the Bride. Perhaps you can find a solution not to offend your Mom and to make her feel happy and relaxed, knowing that she is dressed both beautifully and appropriately.
