     MOG Afternoon Military Wedding Attire

My son and the groomsmen will be wearing choker white dress military uniforms. The bridesmaids are wearing navy blue tea length dresses, all in different styles. I told the MOB I would wait for her to select her dress first, but she told me to go ahead as she is more concerned that I like, and am comfortable with, my dress than she is concerned with me coordinating with her. She said she is likely to choose a jewel tone color. The wedding is in 6 weeks and I am uncomfortable waiting much longer. (The MOB has still not chosen her dress.) I have found a lavender dress, a full-length jacket dress with some beading on the top of the dress under the jacket. Would this be okay? Would a pale pink be better? I look best in strong color or icy tones.

Dear NavyMom,

By all means choose your dress now. The MOB should have chosen hers by now. The color seems fine with me, but I'm not the fashion expert. There may be an issue with the length of your dress. While length is only one element of formality, it does dictate some of it. Your dress shouldn't be more formal than the bridesmaids'. So, compare your choice to theirs before making your decision.

Best wishes,

I may need to get more of a semi-formal dress. How do I distinguish between dresses that are more formal or less formal? I understand it is not just the length of the dress. I feel I will not look good at all in a knee-length dress and am unable to fine something in a mid-calf length, so I would feel most comfortable in a long dress. What constitutes a long dress that is slightly less formal? What should I be looking for? I really appreciate this site and the help you have given me so far!

Please post this as a new question. In the mean time, I think the question about formality has been answered previously so be sure to search.

Thank you.
