The wedding is at 3 p.m. in the brides hometown which is hundreds of miles from where grooms family lives. It is less than 2 months away. The bride and bridesmaid dresses are, bride white floor length, and bridesmaids and maid of honor, black tea length. The MOB refuses to tell MOG the color or length of her dress. (although there have been hints that it is black like the bridesmaids) She wants it to be a surprise. MOG in PANIC mode as to what color and length to wear.

Since you are not getting the cooperation of the MOB, then do what you are comfortable with and try to coordinate with bridesmaids but not exactly as they are. Don't worry too much about the surprise, it's a small part of a very important day for your son and his fiance. Don't panic!!! Since the MOB wants things to be a surprise the MOG should coordinate with the bridesmaid dress and the rest of the color scheme at the wedding (if any colors other than black). As for the style dress...make sure that it matches the formality of the bride and her bridal party. Since the bride is floor length and the girls are tea length, the MOG can wear whatever length she likes the best. As for style...whatever looks best on her. And as I said before, as long as the style matches the formality of everyone else it's fine.
As for colors...she can always wear black, but if you think the MOB is then I would pick a different color so you aren't stepping on any toes. But, on the other hand...since the MOB has her lips sealed the MOG could wear it, maybe just tell the bride and see what she says. Other colors that would look nice would be platinum, champagne and gold. If there are other colors (besides black) then you can always find a color that compliments them.
