MOG wants to wear same dress as she wore to previous wedding
The MOG wants to wear the same dress she wore to her middle son's first wedding. She says she only wore it once and the color matches our wedding colors. I don't want her wearing the same dress to our wedding that she wore to her other son's failed marriage as well as the color makes her look washed out. How do I politely steer her away from the "failed marriage" dress and towards something new? She and her husband hate to spend money for clothes(but not on other frivilious things) and always shop at goodwill so I'm sure she will list cost of a new dress as a reason not to change dresses.

You can certainly make suggestions but be careful not to offend her. Remember, it will be a long life with a mother-in-law who's been hurt over a dress choice. Try to focus on what's really important here - your relationship - which is much more important in the long run than the dress color she chooses for your wedding. There should be no correlation between her dress choice and a successful marriage.
Unlike the bridesmaids' dresses, the bride doesn't get to select the mother's gowns. In the end, it really is her choice of what to wear. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".

I completely agree. The dress really doesn't have any "baggage" attached to it. It is just a dress. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
