My daughter is getting married in mid May. It will be a garden wedding in the early afternoon. The bridesmaids dresses are knee-length in apple green and the flowers will be multi-colored gerbera daisies (spring bouquets). I found a dress that is ivory with a lace jacket, but my daughter thinks it is too formal. I have found another one that is a sleeveless tea length dress in a floral pattern (pastel watercolors, but somewhat bright). I like it and my daughter approves, but I have had several sales women tell me that I should I wear a more "toned down" solid dress as mother of the bride. What do you think?

Congratulations on your daughter's wedding! Although you might want to follow the sales women's advice and wear a solid color dress suitable for the garden wedding (tea length is perfect), in a cheerful color that would complement overall colors of the wedding, you might as well use the dress you selected since both you and your daughter approve it. My understanding is, your daughter is leaning towards more "informal" look, since she did not like your first choice of a dress. Discuss it with her once again, and make your decision based on what both of you would be most comfortable with. Enjoy the wedding! I agree. As long as it isn't too bright, like vibrant orange or red, and it isn't revealing, you are fine. The fact that your daughter approves, seals the deal. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
