My fiance's mother, (the MOG) is from Germany where according to her, weddings are "not such a big deal." Apparently, there are not really any rules concerning proper roles and etiquette - even the bridesmaids get to chose their own attire without regard to coordinating styles and colors!
She has expressed to my fiance her reluctance to wear anything other than pants and says she cannot remember the last time she wore a dress or skirt - much less had one in her closet. He asked me whether this would be ok, and I quite adamantly said absolutely not - it would look ridiculous in the pictures for his mother to be so casual and that for her oldest son's wedding, she can bite the bullet and wear a dress.
The wedding is next October at 5 P.M. and will be a full Catholic ceremony in a church.

Dear Nebride,
As in all cases, we should follow the etiquette observed in the country we are visiting. It would be best if your fiance informed his mother that the wedding is formal and she should dress appropriately so she and others are not uncomfortable.
There are many formal pant suits. Perhaps she can find one.
