Step-mom wedding attire when there is no mother of bride
Our situation is complicated. My step-daughter is getting married in October. It will be an afternoon, outdoor wedding. We have not seen or heard from her for 13 years (long story). We have only been in communication for less than 2 months. Her mom and step-dad will not be attending the wedding. She wants her dad to give her away.
I have read that I should not outshine the bride or mothers. Given that her mother will not be in attendance, how do I dress, as a guest or what?

Dear Tersie,
It may be best to have your husband ask how formal the wedding will be and how she wishes you to dress. It appears to me that she is reaching out and it seems even more important to appear as if you want to adhere to her wishes, especially since it is her wedding.
