     Stepmother of Groom Dress

I am the stepmother of the groom. The wedding is in August at a very nice restaurant overlooking the ocean. It is outside but in a covered area. The mother of the bride has a very beautiful and fancy dress. I know that strapless is not appropriate for me, does that mean that a dress with spagetti straps is also not appropriate? Also, is it OK for my dress to have a little bead work? The mother of the groom will also be at the wedding, but I believe we will both be treated as part of the wedding party.

Dear Jstepmom,

Normally, the stepmothers are not treated as mothers. So, please find this out first. If you are not, you would be dressed as one of the guests. If you are being treated as a mother, you would coordinate with the groom's mother and not dress more formally than either her or the mother of the bride.

Spaghetti straps could be all right if the dress isn't revealing. It must be tasteful. Beading is reserved for formal evening affairs.

Best wishes,
