My stepson is getting married the beginning of September. The bridesmaids are wearing apple red varying lengths, MOB is wearing a red dress with a sheer jacket, MOG is wearing a black dress, off the shoulders with sequins on top, Grandmothers are wearing navy blue and bordeaux - all full length. After trying on 100's of dresses I finally found a full-length black dress, very simple, with a V neck and a small sheer jacket with a rhinestone clip in the center that covers my shoulders. The Bride is not real picky and told me that I could wear any color and any length. Is it okay that my dress is the same color as MOG's?

Dear Stepmother,
No. The color is not what is important in this case. If you are very close to the groom and not considered 'one of the mothers' then wearing a dress this formal is a problem. Typically, stepmothers are in the background and are not treated as 'one of the mothers'.
If you are treated as one of the mothers and are active in the wedding planning, then your dress could be fine.
The real issue is that no one should upstage either of the mothers. Mother of the bride is considered most important with the Mother of the groom next. So, if you think that your dress may upstage either of them, it is not a good choice.
