What should stepmother of bride wear when there is no specific dress code

My step-daughter is getting married in Cancun in March. She is wearing a formal dress and told my husband that she doesn't have a specific color or dress code except long pants (rules of the resort). What should I choose for color and style. We don't want to be under or over dressed for this special day.

Dear Original,

You really need more information. The time of day, exact location, and attendant's attire matter when choosing what is proper.

More than likely you would be wearing a cocktail style dress.

Best wishes,
