handkerchief hem on mother of the bride dress

The bridesmaids are wearing full length strapless black gowns that are beaded at the bodice and have a chiffon overlay on the bottom. The "ring girl" is wearing a black chiffon dress with a drop waist and a handkerchief hem. The bride and flower girl are both in ivory. The only flowers are a few ivory roses with a predominance of red roses. As the MOB I have been looking for a dress in red to add some color to the wedding party. When shopping with my daughters, the bride and MOH, we found me a black chiffon dress with beading on the v-neck and a handkerchief hem. Is this hem ok for a 4pm ceremony and 6pm reception? How can I add color to this dress if I don't find something in red before the wedding? Please respond asap since I will be meeting the MOG 8/27 at the bridal shower and will need to let her know my dress plans. thank you for your help.

Dear MOB in Black,

Black isn't a good color because you may look like one of the bridesmaids. Mothers are supposed to blend and coordinate but never wear the same exact color.

Your hem should be the same length as the bridesmaids. But if it is close, you are fine. Some handkerchief hem dresses appear more like cocktail dresses, so this is a concern. You may not be dressed formally enough.

If you could find a red dress it would be better. Perhaps the bridal shop has a red chiffon overlay for the skirt of this dress.

Best wishes,
