the bridemaids are wearing cream color tops and pastels skirts. i would like to know a good color for the grooms mother to wear. it is a august wedding.

Please check in with the bride's mother to see what she is wearing since traditionally, the bride's mother gets to choose her dress first. Then, choose your attire to match the formality of her dress and coordinate, but don't suplicate the colors.

I would suggest a soft mauve or dusty rose. Although the bridesmaids are wearing pastel skirts, the slightly deeper colors suggested would fit in nicely with the cream color and allow the groom's mother to stand out just enough without being too contradictory to the color scheme.
